Chatbots and other AI tools are quickly becoming part of homework, hobbies and everyday curiosity. Many children are already using them, sometimes before their parents have decided how they feel about it. The best starting point is a calm conversation rather than a ban or a free-for-all.
Explain what AI is
Children often assume that a chatbot knows everything. A simple explanation helps: AI tools learn patterns from large amounts of text and use them to write answers. They can be helpful, and they can also be wrong while sounding very sure. Encourage your child to treat answers as a first draft to be checked.
Check the answer together
Pick a question your child asked and look up the answer in a textbook or a trusted website. Seeing a mistake first-hand teaches more than any warning. Make "How do we know this is true?" a family habit.
Use AI to learn, not to skip learning
There is a big difference between asking an AI to explain a hard idea and asking it to do the homework. Agree on what is acceptable, and check what your child's school allows. A good rule of thumb is that the child should be able to explain the work in their own words afterwards.
Protect personal information
Remind your child never to share full names, addresses, school details, photos of other people or passwords with any online tool. If an app asks for personal data, they should check with you first.
Stay curious and creative
AI can be a fun way to brainstorm story ideas, practise a language or explore how something works. Encourage your child to experiment, then to improve the result with their own thinking.
Keep the conversation open
Technology will keep changing. What lasts is a child who feels able to talk to you about what they see and use online. Ask regularly, listen without judging and update the family rules as tools change.
