From Playing Roblox to Making Games: A Guide for Parents

If your child spends hours in Roblox, you have likely wondered whether that time is well spent. A growing number of parents have noticed that the same interest can be turned into something productive: instead of only playing games, children can learn to make them.

Why this interest is worth encouraging

Children who enjoy a game already understand rules, goals, rewards and challenge. They have an instinct for what makes something fun. Learning to build their own world uses that instinct and adds new skills such as planning a layout, writing simple scripts and testing with other players.

What building a game involves

Creating even a small game means making many decisions. What is the goal? How does a player win or lose? What does the map look like? Which objects move, and what happens when a player touches them? Each decision calls for logic and design, and each one can be tested by playing the result.

Start small

A first project can be as simple as an obstacle course with a finish line. Small projects finish quickly, which keeps children motivated, and they give clear places to improve: add a checkpoint, change the colours, make the jumps harder.

Keep safety in mind

Whether your child plays or builds, set sensible boundaries. Review privacy and chat settings together, keep personal details private and agree on spending rules before anything is bought. Talk openly so your child feels comfortable telling you if something online makes them uncomfortable.

Join the conversation

Ask your child to give you a tour of their favourite game and to explain why it is fun. Then ask what they would change if it were their own. Their answers will tell you whether they are ready to move from player to creator.

Guided learning

Many children learn faster with an instructor who can answer questions and suggest the next challenge. Agmo Junior runs a Roblox-based experience that you can read about on our programs page, and our team is happy to explain how it works for different ages.
