The school holidays are a chance for children to rest, explore and try new things. Without any structure, though, weeks can disappear into late mornings and endless screens, and parents are left wondering where the time went. A light plan, made together, can help everyone enjoy the break.
Keep a gentle routine
Children do better when the day has a shape. Keep wake-up and bedtime within a reasonable range, and plan a few anchor points, such as a morning activity, lunch together and a quiet hour in the afternoon. The rest of the day can stay flexible.
Mix four types of activity
A simple balance is to include something active, something creative, something social and something quiet each week. Active might be cycling or swimming. Creative could be drawing, building or coding a small project. Social means time with friends or relatives, and quiet is reading or free play.
Let your child choose
Ask your child to pick one or two goals for the holiday, such as finishing a book series, learning to cook a favourite dish or building a game. Children follow through more when the goal is theirs, and they feel a real sense of progress when it is done.
Try a short course or camp
A class of a few days or a few weeks can give a holiday some momentum and introduce your child to new friends and interests. Choose something that matches what your child enjoys rather than what looks impressive.
Plan outings that cost little
Parks, libraries, museums and local markets can all make good days out. Ask your child to help plan the route and the budget, which is a lesson in itself.
Leave room for boredom
Unscheduled time is not wasted. Many children come up with their best ideas once they run out of things to do. Resist filling every hour, and let them surprise you.
Reflect at the end
Before school resumes, ask your child what they enjoyed most and what they would do again. Use the answers to plan the next break. If you would like to see what a class looks like, message us on WhatsApp at +6016-722 9656 or email agmojunior@gmail.com, and have a look at our programs.
