What is Claude Code, and who is it for?

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool from Anthropic that runs in your terminal. Instead of only suggesting snippets in a chat window, it can read your project, plan a change, edit multiple files and run commands, while you review and approve what it does. It is built for software engineers and technical teams. If you do not write or maintain code, it is not the right place to start.

What makes Claude Code different from a chat assistant

A normal chat assistant answers what you paste into it. Claude Code works inside your actual codebase. It can explore the folder structure, find the relevant files, make a change across several of them, run your tests or build command and react to the output. That loop of looking, acting and checking is what makes it "agentic". If the term is new to you, our explainer on what agentic AI is covers the idea, and the difference from a simple assistant is laid out in AI assistant vs AI agent.

Because it can act, it needs boundaries. You decide which commands it may run and which changes need your approval. The engineer stays responsible for what gets merged.

Typical uses for engineers

  • Understanding an unfamiliar codebase. Ask where a feature is implemented or how a request flows through the system.
  • Making a scoped change. Add a field, rename a function across files, or update an API call and its tests.
  • Fixing a failing test or build. It can run the command, read the error and propose a fix.
  • Writing and updating tests and documentation. Useful for the work teams tend to postpone.
  • Repetitive refactors. Mechanical changes that touch many files.
  • Automation in scripts and pipelines. It can be run non-interactively with the -p flag, for example as a step in a CI job.

In every case the pattern is the same: give a clear task, let it work, then review the diff the way you would review a colleague's pull request.

How CLAUDE.md gives it project memory

Claude Code starts each session without remembering your last one. A file called CLAUDE.md is how you give it standing instructions: how to build and test the project, coding conventions, folder layout and things to avoid. These files can be placed at different levels, such as for a user, a whole project, or a specific folder, so that general rules and local rules both apply. A short, accurate CLAUDE.md usually improves results more than a long, vague one. The hierarchy is also an exam topic; see the CCAR-F cheat sheet.

Who should use it, and who should not

Claude Code suits people who are comfortable with a terminal, version control and reading code: software engineers, DevOps and platform engineers, and technical leads. It rewards people who can judge whether a change is correct.

It is a poor starting point for managers, marketers, finance or HR teams. Those roles get far more value from using Claude for writing, analysis and organising work in the regular chat interface, with good prompting. Our guides on writing a good prompt for Claude and Claude Projects are a better first step for non-technical staff.

Risks to manage

  • Review everything. Generated code can be wrong or insecure while looking confident. Read the diff and run the tests.
  • Limit permissions. Do not let it run commands you would not run yourself, and be careful near production systems and credentials.
  • Mind your data. Code can contain secrets and customer data. Check your company's AI usage rules first, and see whether you can put customer data into Claude.
  • Keep accountability human. A tool wrote the draft; a named engineer owns the result.

Where to learn more

Anthropic offers a free hands-on course, Claude Code in Action, on Anthropic Academy. Claude Code configuration and workflows is also one of the domains of the Claude Certified Architect exam, covered on our Claude Code domain page and in the CCAR-F workshop. Unfamiliar terms are explained in the AI glossary. Agmo Studio is a Select Partner of the Anthropic Claude Partner Network; certifications are issued by Anthropic, and Agmo runs exam-preparation workshops.

Common Questions

FAQ

Is Claude Code only for professional developers?
It is designed for people who work with code and a terminal, such as engineers and technical leads. Non-technical staff will usually get more value from Claude's regular chat interface.
What is CLAUDE.md?
It is a file of standing instructions for a project, such as build commands, conventions and things to avoid. Claude Code reads it at the start of a session so you do not repeat yourself.
Does Claude Code replace code review?
No. It can make mistakes, so changes should still be reviewed and tested by an engineer who owns the result.
