"Which is better, Claude or ChatGPT?" is the wrong question for a company. Both are capable assistants, both change quickly, and the best choice depends on your tasks, data rules and team. This article gives you a method for deciding. We teach Claude, so we are not neutral — treat this as a framework rather than a verdict, and test both on your own work.
Compare on tasks, not headlines
Pick five real tasks your team does — say, summarising a long contract, drafting a client proposal, analysing a spreadsheet, writing code, answering a policy question. Run each through both tools with the same prompt and have the people who own the task grade the results against criteria you set beforehand. Models and features change often, so a test beats any comparison table.
Questions that matter more than benchmarks
- Data and admin controls. What business plans exist, what are the data-handling terms, and can IT manage users and settings? Check the vendor's current terms against your policy.
- Integration. Does it connect to the tools you use — documents, email, code repositories, internal systems?
- Reusable setups. Can your team package instructions and knowledge (for example Claude Projects and Skills) so good practice spreads?
- Building on it. If you will build agents or apps, compare the APIs, tooling and ecosystem for your use. For Claude, that includes Claude Code, the Agent SDK and MCP.
- Cost. Per-seat plans versus usage-based API pricing; and the cost of the time people spend learning.
- Support and skills. Is there local training and a certification path your people can follow?
You may not need to choose just one
Many companies use more than one AI tool. What matters more is that people use whichever tool well: clear prompts, checking output, protecting data. Those skills transfer across tools.
What skills matter regardless of tool
- Writing clear instructions with context and examples.
- Evaluating and validating output before use.
- Designing workflows with human checkpoints.
- Governance: data classification and policy.
