This domain is 10% of the CCAO-F exam. Work out why output is weak and fix it systematically.
Diagnose before you rewrite
When output disappoints, find out why. Most problems fall into a few buckets:
- Unclear request — missing audience, format or criteria. Fix the prompt.
- Missing information — Claude was not given the facts it needed and guessed. Supply the context or tell it to ask.
- Wrong tool or model — a task needing deeper reasoning or live data on a setup that cannot do it.
- Overloaded task — too many things at once. Split into steps.
- Conflicting instructions — rules that contradict each other.
Change one thing at a time
Adjust a single variable (the instruction, an example, the context, the model), compare results, and keep what helps. Changing everything at once teaches you nothing.
Optimise once it works
- Tighten prompts and remove unneeded text.
- Turn a good prompt into a reusable Project or Skill.
- Measure outcomes — time saved, error rate, rework — to decide if the workflow is worth keeping.
Common exam angles
- The most likely cause of a described failure.
- The best single next step to improve results.
- Recognising when the right fix is a process change, not a better prompt.
